Iran is Hot, and is Going to Get Hotter!

Thu Feb 01, 2007 at 11:03:51 PM PDT

There was an article in the WaPo today about the Bush administration pressuring European oil company executives not to invest in Iran right now. Apparently for the past two weeks they have been scrambling to dissuade anyone from doing business with Iran, saying that doing so would be a mistake.

During one session a State department official apparently told a bunch of these guys that Iran was hot, and was going to get hotter.

Shock and Awe

At Bush’s stupidity!

Well, he’s finally done it. He’s hung Saddam Hussein on the eve of one of the holiest days in Islam: "Eid al Atha"... the day of sacrifice,  and he’s made Saddam into an (unworthy) sacrificial lamb in the eyes of millions of Muslims.

Saddam went to the gallows dignified, with Qur’an in hand, and to the sound of  prayers being recited (on the video, before the taunting). He met his destiny as a martyr, or at least that’s the impression that many will get.

What a crock of shit this has turned out to be!

More after the flip...

The Doha Debates

Sun Feb 26, 2006 at 01:13:18 PM PDT

This diary might have a fairly narrow appeal, so disregard it at your leisure. I thought I would put it up anyhow, because it's news, and it pertains to the politics of conflict resolution.

I just got back from the filming of this month's installation of "The Doha Debates" a series of debates held here that are broadcast by BBC World. Each month, a proposition is put forth in the form of a statement. Four panelists, moderated by Tim Sullivan, then debate the proposition and at the end the audience votes to accept or reject the proposal.

This month's proposal was "This House believes that the international community must accept Hamas as a political partner".

Big Bill Haywood and the Dominionists

Sat Feb 11, 2006 at 03:49:59 PM PDT

In light of all of the recent discussion about Theocracy, I have been reflecting on some things. This issue goes to the core of our identity as a nation, and harsh lines are drawn on each side. At stake is our freedom... the freedom to think, vote and worship as we please, as well as the freedom to be free of established religion or religious coercion. Traditional religionists accuse the secular left of bigotry and narrow-mindedness, while the secular left thinks that the traditional religionists are out to overthrow the republic and erect a government by clergy.

Direct Action: Over 500 Ways to Fight Back!

Wed Nov 09, 2005 at 03:47:25 AM PDT

Shortly after last year's fiasco of Nov. 2, a bunch of us were sitting around; we were depressed, upset and not sure what to do about it. We decided to brainstorm some ideas about what we could do next. This is what we came up with.

First a caveat, we didn't publish the list at first because it was just for kicks. In re-reading it, it was suggested that we share these ideas with others, because a lot of them are damned funny. Note that this is for entertainment purposes only, we are not suggesting that anyone should actually oppose the Bush Regime. Perhaps by sharing the list, some folks out there in the legal community can help us weed out any ideas that might be legally questionable and help us come up with an action list that we can actually recommend. The following is not a threat, nor is it an incitement for anyone to commit violence. Without further adieu, here is the list, feel free to add your own....

  1. Be Un-Governable.
  2. SCREAM!!!
  3. Wear a black armband to mourn the death of the republic. Tell people why when they ask.

More below... feel free to add your own ideas! Fuck Bush!

20 Amazing Facts About
Voting in the USA

check it out here

While I haven't fact-checked all of the assertions that this person has made about voting in America, off the top of my head I can say that most of this stuff is true, and I've heard it before (you probably have too).

America is facing a crisis of legitimacy if we can't even have a clean election. What the heck do we do about this?

Islamic Extremists vs. Criminals

Sun Feb 20, 2005 at 03:14:29 PM PDT

There was a great diary posted here a few days ago about "honour killings" in Iraq. The post was based on article from the Independent written by an Iraqi woman, Houzan Mahmoud, currently living in exile. I was appalled by the stories, and I commend the writer for bringing this issue to light. One thing that does kind of irk me though, is a trend in the media as a whole to attribute these actions to "Islamic extremists".  I think calling the perpetrators "Islamic extremists" is absolutely appropriate for any actions  that are actually sanctioned by Islamic religious law, but I dispute that the term should be applied to common criminals who act without any religious authority or conviction. Below is a copy of a letter I wrote to the author.
