Countdown to 50$ Oil (1) - I think i'll start my own series
Thu Sep 14, 2006 at 08:32:54 AM PDT
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/...
Crude-oil prices have fallen about $14, or roughly 17 percent, from their July 14 peak of $78.40. After falling seven straight days, they rose slightly Wednesday in trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange, to $63.97, partly in reaction to a government report showing fuel inventories a bit lower than expected. But the overall price drop is expected to continue, and prices could fall much more in the weeks and months ahead.
Huge Oil Discovery in Gulf of Mexico
Tue Sep 05, 2006 at 07:45:28 AM PDT
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/...
Tests of a deep-water well in the Gulf of Mexico could indicate a significant oil discovery, three companies announced Tuesday, in the first project to tap into a region that reportedly could boost U.S. oil and gas reserves by as much as 50 percent.
The Jack 2 well was drilled about 5.3 miles deep by U.S. oil company Chevron Corp., with partners Statoil ASA of Norway and Devon Energy Corp. of Oklahoma City. During the test, the Jack 2 well sustained a flow rate of more than 6,000 barrels of oil per day, Statoil said.
AFS Trinity Files Patent on Extreme Hybrid Plug-in Technology
Thu May 11, 2006 at 09:04:43 PM PDT
AFS Trinity Power Corporation today filed its patent application disclosing the company's new technology for an Extreme Hybrid(TM) car capable of carrying the average American motorist more than 250 miles on a single gallon of gasoline or ethanol.
http://www.evworld.com/...
"The Extreme Hybrid(TM) won't only cost less to operate on a daily basis, it will also be the first hybrid that will save enough money from reduced operating costs to more than offset the higher purchase price of the car," added Furia. "In fact, over five years, we estimate that the XH(TM) owner will be $11,000 ahead and, over 10 years, $22,000 ahead."

The Electric Rav4 - Wow!
Wed May 10, 2006 at 06:32:04 AM PDT
Came across some interesting information today regarding an plug in rav4, more below:
"The RAV4EV has a governed top speed of 80 miles per hour, and a range of 80-120 miles on a full charge. Mileage depends on the same factors as a traditional gasoline-powered vehicle, mainly tire drag and average speed (aerodynamic drag). The RAV4EV has 24 12-volt NiMH batteries capable of outputting 27.4kWh of energy."
http://en.wikipedia.org/...
OK, so maybe there is one catch after all. It doesn't use gas. At all. It's not a hybrid, it's an electric vehicle. The 'mpg' I'm listing here (166) is how far I can go on $3 of electricity, so it is a "mpg-cost-equivalent. You've probably never heard of this car, because there is a long list of people who don't want you to have one, including the manufacturers and oil cartels. In fact, these same people were successful in getting rid of the RAV4 EV back in 2003, via their lobbyists and marketing departments.

Could this development start a biodiesel revolution?
Tue May 09, 2006 at 08:29:28 AM PDT
A team of University of California-Berkeley students and faculty, presenting an intriguing technology for creating bio-diesel fuel, has snagged the $25,000 top prize in a university contest sponsored by Intel Capital.
Aurora BioFuels, an alternative energy company, won both the first prize and the People's Choice Award at the finals for the eighth annual University of California-Berkeley Business Plan Competition, the university said.
According to UC-Berkeley, Aurora BioFuels has developed a way to create bio-diesel fuel with yields that are 125 times higher and have 50 percent lower costs than current production methods.

World's First-ever Rubber Tire (Alternative)
Thu May 04, 2006 at 10:28:04 AM PDT
Intersting piece of information on new tires being developed:
http://www.newtechspy.com/...
"The Polyurethane elastomer auto tire has been in development since 2001 and Amerityre claims that it is superior to rubber in almost every way. Environmentally the tire uses 96% less energy to produce than rubber, is 100% recyclable and non-toxic."
" Performance figures are equally impressive with 45% less rolling resistance, giving the tire an average temperature 80˚F cooler than rubber, adding up to 10-20% better fuel economy."
"Lee Iacocca: "A material so dynamic, it will change the way tires are produced forever""
BREAKING: Scientists Discover (Biggest Ever) Oilfield off U.S. coast
Mon May 01, 2006 at 10:17:32 AM PDT
Great news for energy independence, bad news for global warming folks:
http://www.newtechspy.com/...
Scientists from the University of Cornell have discovered a massive amount of Oil off the coast of Louisiana. The find is some 60 billion barrels or 3 Times more than current US recoverable Oil of 20 Billion barrels, and would bring US total reserves to 80 billion barrels which is on par with Venezuela. In comparison to other finds around the world, this is twice the size of all Oil ever found in the North Sea and 6 times larger than the estimates of the Alaskan ANWR oil deposits.
Shale Oil is the Answer
Sat Apr 22, 2006 at 08:28:37 PM PDT
Was reading this article last year concerning shell's in-situ oil shale practice. I know most people here are against using oil at all, but I for one don't want to go back to the middle ages. This technology could hold us over until renewables could catch up.

Tiny Reactor May Aid Biodiesel Production
Wed Apr 19, 2006 at 11:32:29 AM PDT
Found this intersting article on a new techology for biodiesel production:
http://www.newsvine.com/...
A tiny chemical reactor that can convert vegetable oil directly into biodiesel could help farmers turn some of their crops into homegrown fuel to operate agricultural equipment instead of relying on costly imported oil.
Burying CO2 for Oil Extraction
Wed Mar 08, 2006 at 08:13:05 AM PDT
So apprently there's a new method for oil extraction that could quadruple known oil reserves in the US, and it can be done by burying CO2 from our coal fired plants.:
http://www.planetark.com/...
"The DOE said 89 billion barrels could potentially be added to current proved US oil reserves of 21.9 billion barrels through injection of carbon dioxide, the main gas that most scientists believe is warming the earth. "
Is this the coming energy breakthrough that will "startle" most Americans?

Ethanol Fuel More Advantageous Than Thought
Thu Jan 26, 2006 at 06:23:19 PM PDT
Just saw this article on Yahoo. Very promising. Perhaps if we find the right crop to use, something that grows in the US most of the year and does not harm the land, we'll be golden.
"The study refined results from several previous studies by comparing the total energy that goes into making ethanol gas from corn, such as harvesting and refining, and comparing it to the energy needed to produce gasoline from fossil fuels. Kammen's team looked into levels of greenhouse gases produced by both the production and the use of each fuel."

American Energy Harvest Plan
Mon Dec 12, 2005 at 07:14:04 AM PDT
Just read governor Rendell's Envergy Harvest Plan. Everyone should read it, I really think he nailed what needs to be done.
http://renewableenergyaccess.com/rea/news/story?id=40073
"First, the federal government can use its regulatory and legislative power to require greater reliance on alternative and renewable fuels by our utilities and energy companies. Second, it can use its purchasing power to stimulate private investment in renewable fuel production and fuel-saving technologies. Third, it can redirect subsidies enacted before the energy companies began making extraordinary profits and allocate those funds instead to renewable fuels production. Lastly, it can launch a modern day Manhattan Project by unifying the disparate renewable fuels deployment strategies going on in the states, the private sector and across the vast federal bureaucracy to accelerate the rollout of renewable energy production.
